Lin Wei - About WWF

After reading up on WWF on http://wwf.panda.org/, here are some summary of this organization (I thought that it would be good to understand more about this organization as it is the main organization working to help conserving pandas):

About WWF

1. Their mission: to stop the degradation of our planet’s natural environment, and build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature

2. WWF is the organization behind ‘Earth Hour’ which hopes to change our attitude in using and conserving electricity.

3. It has been working for 50 years since the 60s

4. Their priority species includes tiger, gorilla, elephants, rhinos, marine turtles and of course, the giant panda which we’re researching on.

5. Their priority regions includes the Amazon, Himalayas, Coral Triangle, Arctic, Coastal East Africa and Borneo.

6. Some global initiatives include ‘China for a Global Shift’, ‘Climate & Energy’, ‘Forest & Climate’, ‘Green Heart of Africa’,  ‘Market Transformation’ and ‘Smart Fishing’.

    1. This is another organisation which is trying to conserve pandas: Pandas International. If you are interested in knowing more about what they do you can check out their website: http://www.pandasinternational.org/.

In short, they are a non-profitable organisation which aims to ensure that 'not one captive or wild panda is lost'.

P.S. I could not find other organisation as WWF is the main organization which is helping out with the pandas conservation efforts with help of the local governments. I believe that there are not many organisations trying to help in conserving the pandas as it requires a lot of funds, which most organisations are lacking of.):

  3. Hi Lin Wei!

    1. How do you think the 'Earth Hour' will benefit the giant pandas?

    2. I realise their organisation icon is a giant panda! :D Why did they choose the giant panda out of all the other animals?

    1. 1. Earth hour will encourage and raise awareness of the public to reduce their use of electricity. Since pandas at the conservation sites are effected by the impacts due to human's activities, which also includes the use of electricity. With this activity, they will be more aware that they should be more careful with using electricity and conserve more energy, this will reduce the effects of human's activities on pandas.
      2. This is probably because the formation of WWF was at the same time, in which, Chi Chi, a panda, was borned.

    3. Well, depending on how well they advertise it! Some years, I do, because my parents will be like it is earth hour, let's turn off our lights at 20 00.

However, I think that it is not very efficient if only a few households supports it. Gladly, there are many countries in the world supporting this project! (:
