Hi guys!
The WWF,China has set some goals for itself to help conserve the pandas: http://en.wwfchina.org/en/what_we_do/species/fs/panda/
The fact that they have goals means that they have the drive to save the giant pandas. I believe that they are able to achieve these goals as they are realistic and they have also been successful in other areas of panda conservation! :) (refer to Lin Wei's post: Don't be so depressed about what you read, read this!)
In order to achieve their goals, everyone must play a part. We cannot only depend on WWF to save the pandas! Although we do not have the resources to build a nature reserve or any of that sort, I'm sure we can help to donate a few dollars/cents if they are in need of any financial help.
I totally agree with Zhou Zhou's point of view! Although most people wish to contribute and save the pandas, however, the cost and budget of theirs are very restricted. If everyone donates $0.50, in a day they can raise more than a billion(with such a huge world population). By donating this mere $0.50, it can fulfill their wishes and plans for the pandas, and allow the panda's population to grow!
ReplyDeleteHowever, for saying so, I believe that most people do not donate as it is quite troublesome to go onto WWF's webpage to donate with their credit cards or Paypal accounts. Especially for children and teenagers who do not have either of them.

Do you think that financial support is what the organisation lacks the most? Why?

Yes. Since it is a non-profit organisation, they are limited to what they can do. Even if they appeal to the government to support them by providing funds, the government will most likely not do so. For example, in China where there is rapid economic development, most of the money will be channeled to building the business district. Also, sometimes people do not donate because they feel that panda conversation does not benefit them on their part.

How do you think the public can play a part, be it to conserve the pandas or to achieve the goals?

Well, I feel that the public can donate as much as they can if any organisation is in need of financial support to save the giant pandas. We should also actively take part in any panda education programmes so that we can learn more about their plight and how we can help.
DeleteTo help WWF achieve their goals, the public should NOT be poaching or cutting down the bamboo forests. Also, for the people in the TCM industry, perhaps they could look for other herbs instead of those which is needed by the giant pandas. We shouldn't buy products made out of panda body parts/fur too :-)
